2 National CACT Coursings
2 National CACT Coursings

After European Coursing Championships we did summer break as heat is not a good friend for top sports performence especially for large dogs. Also for future we‘ll do coursing only in spring/autumn, where temperatures are more favourable.

Being mostly busy with shows in September, Alec appeared on coursing field first week in October. It was organized by RHS Club in nice environment of Silverlake Ranch close to Galanta. Alec was alone and enjoyed the runs, both quite easy on flat fields. Still he managed to hurt his fifth nail. Everything healed within 20 days.

Second CACT coursing he ran a month later at a small airport Male Bielice – Partizanske. Nice place, again flat field, track was not build very favourable for larger dogs. Alec managed all in great manner, despite some quite dangerous situation in second run. This time with no injuries, so we could enjoyed nice day :)

Taking part in these two coursings Alec is IN for title Coursing Winner 2016 in Slovakia, moreover he became also a „Sports Winner 2016“ of „Racing Hounds Slovakia“ club.

Most pictures are from coursing in Partizanske.

European Lure Coursing Championships 2016

To make long story short here is brief summary of our participation: Alec ran in his standard full passionate mode, both runs showed very strong finishes whether down or up the hill. Surviving disqualification attempts from our  ‚greyhound friends“ and receiving no country/racing line preferential points he ended on beautiful 6th place and brought home nice medal as a memory on this top sport event. Am so proud on him :) Well chosen beautiful place, nice weather, meeting old and new friends have certainly contributed to overall positive impressions from this event. I was a bit sick, so could not enjoy the event with my camera as usually but great photographer Marketa Sousedikova has been on place and so we have also lovely photo memories :) Further photo credit and thanks goes to Barbara Thiel (greyhoundshow.de) and Patricia Finikova and Ralph Bayer.

4th place (out of 6) for Alec - Straight ahead Basil. He actually did fabulously, he got same points as 3rd place, but there were moments for which he could rather gain deductions, which then reflect the placement;) In 1st run he decided to take a shortage and caught the hare in the middle of the field luckily nothing happend despite pulling further ..... In 2nd run he made triple salto running down the hill, continued without stopping and keeping leading position. Not to forget the start was a bit too early in 1st run - so mea culpa also. Nevertheless it was a great event, very well organized coursing and experience for us. Congrats to winners! PS: and most important absolutely no injuries despite really a bit dangerous situations in both runs and difficult terrain.

PS 2: with this result we are in for Dual-Winner Donaueschingen title, so let‘s see how we do in show ring in the summer :)

After long long winter break ;)) we went for our first event in 2016, and this time no show but coursing. And no less then Slovak Coursing Championship in Žilina – Stráňavy. This time three greyhounds at start and though except Alec also his girl friends Ina (Airy El‘f Make My Day) and Alodie Elegance in Motion. Alec ran first run with Alodie and second run with Ina. While first run was very nice clear run for him, which was reflected also in points, in second run he run out of one curve close before finish. Despite that with his incredible drive he managed to be first by  „hare“. To me it is more mistake of the person managing artificial hare as the distance between Alec and artificial hare was too short to allow him to react without problems in the pace he has on sharp curve. But well he finished without serious injuries, and the differential in points from first run were sufficient for him to be #1, getting CACT and going home as Slovak Coursing Champion 2016. In the coursing.eu ranking he is slowly climbing up, currently #5 among males, well let‘s see how the season ends :))) Thanks and congratulations to Al & Ina for nice common runs. And have to mention very positive feedback I received from judges, who highly evaluated his drive and enthusiasm he shows.

Slovak Coursing Championship 2015
Slovak Coursing Championship 2015

***Both Alec & Lucky became Slovak Coursing Champions 2015!!!***

Alec‘s injury from Spitzerberg turned out not to be serious, still having the „on leash“ time whole week testing his running capabilities on Friday before race. As he did not show any issues I decided we do participate on the originally planned and entered  Slovak Coursing Championship.
Despite the difficult track (half on the hill) both Lucky and Alec ran perfectly, to my surprise even Lucky ran up the hill quite easily – now all the times when I let them run even on difficult terrain having a bit worries nothing happens to them is being paid back with good condition and ability to well balance the surface bumps.

Judges evaluations of Lucky‘s both runs were nice surprise for me again: 2nd place out of 5 sprinters at start receiving also resCACT and title Slovak Coursing Champion 2015!!!

Unfortunately (short) history of Alec‘s coursing performance repeated itself and Alec got injured in the finish of second run – cut his paw and nail on the artificial hare. Still ran both of his runs in a great manner even if alone as greyhound;) and with one of the highest score of all sighthounds at start he took the first place and was granted also the title Slovak Coursing Champion 2015!!

Alec‘s injury even if blooding a lot, turned again not to be serious – I am really thankful for that!!! Despite that I decided to cancel our trip to Germany for next coursing event in order to make a small pause and heal everything properly.

In April we did NO SHOW, just coursing :-) As just some 30 minutes away from our home, for us very convenient to participate in coursing taking place in Spitzerberg in Austria. Lucky as usually just perfect run even if a bit slower compared to his racing peers, to my surprise judges evaluated his run to be 3rd out of 6 sprinters at start and Lucky was granted also second CCLA!! He enjoyed the run as usually but I was so happy about placing and CCLA!! :-) Alec ran his first competion. There was one more grey male Happy Hunter‘s Nightfalls on Manhattan – beautiful black greyhound coming also from Germany with similar body construction as Alec. I was really happy that Alec can run with grey sparing again. They ran very clear and nice first run, Alec being faster and getting more points. The second run was worse for Alec, 1st half he ran again just greatly, but then he had to jump badly and he stopped probably from pain and surprise, still tried to catch up but it was clear he has pain and slowed down significantly some 10 metres from finish. Still he finished the race, even if with significant drop in points this time and was placed 2nd. We ran to vet immediately and got him examined, his wrist (right back leg) was a bit swollen and got ice-wrapped. So half happy, half worried we came back home :-)

My big big thanks goes to photographers who took the pictures of my boys and of course the pictures are copyrighted to them: Lucky – Julia Mikulova; Alec – Fritz Wegger

Using the opportunity for Alec to complete his common licence runs with greyhound as sparing we went to Medlanecky sysel in Brno (despite a huge work overload for me, I also put all efforts to get my work done to have this day to be free day;)). He ran with Jarvis Aston Riuna, very experienced grey in coursing. First run he seems to be surprised that there is somebody else with him on the track moreover with the same speed;) he ran a bit unsure and kept behind Jarvis. What a surprise it was for me when in 2nd run he put all his efforts up and easily overtook the leading. I was just speechless!! Licence runs completed!!

Alzbeta Flakova was so nice and took the attached pictures with my camera – big thanks for that!!!

Coursing Championship of Czech Republic 2014
Coursing Championship of Czech Republic 2014

CACIL, CACT Coursing

To continue to enhance Lucky‘s & Alec‘s coursing skills we decided to participate on Coursing Championship of Czech Republic in Ptyrov, in beautiful surroundings of Cesky Raj.

In the whippet sprinter mix there was 12 whippets all together – high number probably mainly due to height issues and consequent remeasuring of whippets in Czech Republic. First run Lucky ran together with Blue Effect Valentine Dogs – well known whippet for his successes in the coursing field and finally placed Nr.3. It was a pleasure for me to see the run, Lucky was even taking a lead in a short part;) and successfully kept closely behind him. Unfortunately his score was significantly lower, which meant for him to start the 2nd run almost as last one. The second run he ran with Chuanita od Hnevína, the small whippet female, which obviously could not keep the pace with Lucky. The fact that it was one of the last races was reflected in the low score again. Still his peer got only 3 points less as Lucky. Comparing this difference to Lucky‘s first run – he should get significantly higher score as he was much better keeping with Efa as this tiny female with him. Finally he was placed on 11ths place (out of 12) with total score of 354 (179 + 175). To me his score didn‘t really match his performance and I wanted to really understand where he stands with his performance. There was the coursing training taking place shortly after this event so  I went there and asked for unbiased evaluation of his running style – in order to understand whether his performance is really that low. The training leader, who is long in coursing service already, told me that he runs very nicely, he would give him some 91 points, certainly more than 90. (which means at least 180 points for the run) However he could be faster – this was exactly what I thought seeing Lucky in action. For the event in Ptyrov it would mean the placing somewhere in the middle. When I told him what he has got instead his face expression clarified everything to me! Yeah, simply it is subjective judgement of the judge not his real performance! not very different comparing to dog shows. I am very disappointed about this „subjective judgement“, where no one can question it and no one is checking if judges are deciding within some professional framework. The one who loose should just take it „sporty“. In my opinion loosing while the peer is better no one has a problem with to take it „sporty“. To feel to be treated unfairly is a different story. Fortunately Lucky & Alec does not understand anything out of this ‚human games“ and comparing to shows they simply just love it! Just look at the pictures in the gallery! :-) So we surely continue doing this activity :-) and I forget about scores and placing – but will watch the cost and avoid long distance drive to such events (unless there will be some other interest of mine;)).

Alec did his training lessons on this event as well as on coursing training the few days later and it seems his nightmare caused by an accident on the racing track can be over. Am happy for that!!  My nightmare just started as it is difficult to  manage to keep him calm while lure starts to move :-) We will go ahead and try to obtain the licence;)

On Sunday I wanted to visit some beautiful castles of this area, unfortunately it was raining and forecast was showing it will not stop that day, so I drove home, making a short stop in Prague and bought some beautiful shirst for my nephew Jurko:)

For pictures from this event thanks to Marketa Sousedikova & her Dog Sports Photo.

PS: I was considering if I should make the above mentioned comments (here or on FB) trying to avoid to be negative but I was learnt to speak what I have in my mind on my MBA classes and this is just my personal opinion on the matter which may not correspond with others views and/or reality. I consider scoring sometimes to be the scoring of the importance and „fame“ of breeder and/or owner and I value highly and honor every judgement, where based on my view this is not the case. Doing either coursing or shows you will certainly experience valuations, which you do not understand, but it won‘t change, so you have to live with it or stop doing it;) Too many exhibitors and/or participants are simply satisfied with as-is status and finally why it should work differently from the rest of the world;)

In order to develop Lucky's coursing skills we went to Austria, to national coursing competition. (CCLA is eqvivalent of our CACT). There were only two whippets in category whippet sprinter mix. Him and one long-legged female. He ran perfectly in full speed as usually but it was not sufficient to overtake her:) Unfortunately the weather was not the best, raining almost all day with small breaks and thus second run was cancelled. Lucky got his first cup for nice second place:-)

CACIL, CACT Coursing

Lucky's first coursing competition:) First run was simply just great. He ran together with Balifail Dylan from Austria (owner Katja Fries), who lately took place Nr.1. Lucky was able to keep behind his neck and took a purler by killing procedure:-) Got only one point less than Dylan and overally 3rd best score (out of 6). Second run he ran together with his friend Fansy (Fantasy Edition Petula-Vera) and hungarian whippet Tisza‐parti Szélvész Legenda. A bit slower performance, still I believe excellent, but got less points and was placed Nr.4 (out of 6).

Above mentioned Coursing competion has been part of Beauty and Performance competition. Second part – the show – took place in Club Show of Slovak Sighthounds' Club in Topolcianky. Judge Barbara Arndt from Canada was judging whippets and preferred not traditional "show line" whippets. Despite that and taking into account his oversize;) Lucky received beautiful mark Excellent and took place Nr.2 in overall ranking of Beauty and Performance Winner 2014 competition in category whippet sprinter mix. Great performance and start of his coursing carreer! :-)
